Crayon Resist

Trying this new technique that was suggested to me. Stamp image color using a waterproof ink (Archival Ink). Color image with crayon (this area will then resist ink). Next I used Adirondack Ink to color area surrounding the image (colors used Meadow and Denim) by inking a felt pad.

note: I discovered I need to press a lot harder with the crayon

ICE BOX CAKE

5 Banana

1 box of Vanilla Wafers Grounded

3/4 cup unsalted butter

1/2 cup of pecans chopped

2 eggs separated

1 cup of power sugar

1 teaspoon of vanilla (for the custard)

2 -1/2 pints of whip cream (2 cups)

Grease Pan about a 12x14 size (sheet cake pan)

1 Box of Vanilla Wafers Crushed fine (put a few cookies in a bag and using a rolling pin smash them)

Take half of the grounded cookies & flattened them into a greased pan. Make custard by creaming butter, sugar, add egg yolks and beat, add vanilla.

Beat egg whites until stiff. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites into custard.

After custard is made layer onto cookie crumbs. Next layer chopped pecan nuts.

Place sliced banana's over nuts and lightly sprinkle with sugar. Make whipped cream (whipped cream beats better if the bowl and beaters are very cold)

Layer whip cream over banana's. Add balance of wafers over whip cream and pat down lightly.

Refrigerate over night. Then ENJOY!

Match book style holders for this year Halloween treats. Materials used are all from CupCards to Go kit.

To make the match book I cut a piece of card stock 9" X 4 1/2" and then scored it at 1/2", 4" and 41/2" points.

Fold and decorate. Remember idea can be used for any season as Halloween (candy corns), Christmas ( mints) and Easter (chocolate eggs).

Well my CupCards to go kit arrive the other day, and since I was out camping last night was the first chance I had to play with the new kit. Above are the results: first card is an easel card design, the next two I used chip board that was included in the kit.

Building a Sukkah

Our grandsons celebrated the festival of Sukkot, commemorating God's enveloping protection of children of Israel. They built a sukkah - a hut of temporary construction, with a roof covering of raw, unfinished vegetable matter (branches, reeds, bamboo, etc.) signifying the temporality and fragily of human habitation and man-made shelter and our utter dependence upon God's protection and providence. For 7 days they camped outside however in a regular tent next to the sukkah.

In the new Taste of Home Magazine (Oct/Nov 2010) I found this recipe for bread. It's called " everything bread".

1 pkg active dry yeast, 3/4 cup warm water, 1 cup warm 2% milk, 1/4 cup softened butter,

2 Tbsp. sugar, 1 egg yolk, 1-1/2 tsp. salt, 4 to 4-1/2 cups all purpose flour, 1 egg white, 2 tsp water

2 tsp. coarse sea salt or kosher salt, 1 tsp. each sesame, caraway and poppy seeds.

In a large bowl dissolve yeast in warm water. Add the milk, butter, sugar, egg yolk, salt and 2 cups flour. Beat on medium speed for 4 minutes. Sit in enough remaining flour to form a firm dough.

Turn onto floured surface knead until smooth and elastic, about 6 -8 minutes. Place in a greased bowl. turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise until doubled about 1 hour.

Punch dough down. Turn into a lightly floured surfaced divide dough into thirds. Shape each into a 20-in. rope. Place ropes on a large greased baking sheet and braid; pinch ends to seal and tuck under. Cover and let rise until doubled. about 45 minutes.

Combine egg white and water; brush over dough. Combine the salt, onion, and seeds; sprinkle over bread. Bake at 375 for 22-28 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from pan to a wire rack and cool

I only used the salt and poppy seeds on mine. Its fast and easy to make a sure success for anyone.

The pillow was purchased at my son's store in Kankakee, Illinois called Frame World and Click Media. He sells several different themed pillows that come with a small stuffed animal when opened. To add to this gift I drew out and painted one of the characters on the pillow and made a painting of it. I think this will complete the gift for the child I'll be giving this too.

I've been busy going through all my art supplies for days now. The worst job has been sorting out collections of papers, by theme or manufacturer. All I can say I can finish out my life without ever having to buy another sheet of patterned paper, but will I? Next on my list is to sort out embellishments.....

So with that being said I did find time to make a card the other day and post it above. Hope you like it.

Apple Slices On the Menu Tonight

Roll out the dough

Assemble

Finish product / Frosted

Recipe for Apple Slices

Peel & Core apples into eights 4lbs (1#=3 whole or 3 1/2 cups sliced)

Cook to boil 1 cup water, 1 1/4 cup sugar, 1 tsp. cinnamon, 1/4 tsp. salt

Mix together 2 T cornstarch with 1/3 cup water

Add to sugar mixture, cook 5 minutes longer

Add apples & cook 10 min. (until apples are soft)

Dough

Sift 2 cups flour, 1/2 tsp. baking powder, 1/2 tsp salt

Cut in 3/4 cup of lard till coarse crumbs

Mix 1 tsp lemon juice, 2 egg yolks, 1/2 cup water

Then sprinkle that over flour mixture and mix

Chill dough several hours

Divide dough in 1/2 roll out into a 8 x 11 pan

Put cooled apples in pan, then roll out the second half of dough

Seal edges all around

Bake at 450 for 20 min. reduce heat to 350 for 30 min. more

Cool

Take power sugar and mix it with water (thin consistency) and drizzle

over the slices.

ENJOY!!!

Cooler Weather

Today was a lot cooler then the weather we have been experiencing in Illinois. So I decided to try my hand on a couple of fall cards, both cards I used the technique of coloring the stamp with markers then stamping them on paper and the other one on glossy paper. The stamps are Posh, markers used are Marvy Brush.

It's been ages that I have created an ATC, having run across some Holtz stamps I had on hand I decided to play at bit last night. For those of you who don't know what ATC's are they are Artist Trading Cards the size of a kids baseball card. (31/2 x 2 1/2) They are fast and fun and you trade them with other artist.

Cat-titude and Cold Cucumber Soup

Having an abundance of cucumbers in my garden I started to search for a recipe to use them up. I found one that fit the bill for it uses 6 pounds of cucumbers. However it also hosted a several other ingredients as peppers, green onions, jalapeno peppers, cilantro, mint, dill, garlic, cayenne pepper, Bayou Blast seasoning, plain yogurt, sour cream, olive oil and white wine vinegar. After mixing all the ingredients just put into a blender. (note: I used a food processor for just yesterday I gave my blender away saying I rarely use it and my daughter-in-law broke hers and needed one to make the boys their drinks.)

Refrigerate for at least 2 hours. Serve the soup with each bowl garnished with a dollop of sour cream and chives. Results: Great taste, and refreshing on a hot summer day.

Fresh Strawberry Pie

Each year I wait for "strawberry time" to make one of my favorite desserts. I would love to share my recipe with you and hope it becomes one of your family favorites.

Fresh Strawberry Pie :

Bottom Layer:

2 cups sliced straberries

1 pastry shell, baked and cooled

Middle Layer:

2 cups halved fresh strawberries, mashed

1 cup sugar

3 tablespoons cornstarch

Top Layer:

2 cups halved fresh strawberries

1 cup whipping cream

2 tablespoons sugar

For bottom layer, placed sliced strawberries in the pie shell.

Middle layer, combine mashed strawberries, sugar and cornstarch in a saucepan. Bring to a boil; cook and stir until mixture is thick and clear. Cool and Pour over bottom layer.

Top Layer: arrange strawberry halves on top of the pie. Add whip cream. ( I generally spread the whip cream all over the top)

Last night I played with a new ink pad I recently purchased. The pad is made by Marvv and its from their signature series called Dee Gruenig Blending Blox (Shades of Green). I also used a stamp by Posh ( 3 Dotted Squares) and one by The Rubbernecker (Butterfly). The card stock is by Stamp A Mania (White Glossy).
